Carlos Velez

Instructor - Music Theory, Aural Skills, Composition, Flute

The music of Carlos Velez is rich in colorful scoring and charm, often evoking a sense of whimsy and fantasy. Featuring a number of works for various chamber ensembles, his music has been performed in venues across the United States and Japan. Many of Velez's compositions have been the product of fruitful artistic collaborations, and his chamber works for clarinet in particular have been performed by The United States Army Band Clarinet Quartet, the Tosca Duo, Clarinundrum, the Una Voce Clarinet Quartet, and others. As a performer, Carlos has had a remarkably versatile career, serving as the solo flutist, and founding member of NeXT ens., as well as the Cincinnati Real-Time Composers. He currently performs regularly with the Orlando Wind Quintet. Dr. Velez studied flute at Stetson University, and the Conservatoire Olivier Messiaen Ecole Nationale de Musique, Danse, et Theatre du Grand Avignon in Avignon, France.

Formerly a graduate assistant in composition at both the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music, Dr. Velez currently teaches Music Theory, Aural Skills, Composition, and Flute at Valencia College, and Technology for Musicians at Stetson University. He holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and Stetson University, His composition teachers have included Keith Fitch, Joel Hoffman, Michael Fiday, Mara Helmuth, Christopher Bailey, and Kari Juusela, and his flute instructors include Jean West, Michel Barruol, Virginia Broffitt Kunzer, and Leah Arsenault.
