Matthew Sylvester

Visiting Professor, English
West Campus

I have a diverse background of experience in teaching and leadership across secondary and higher education. Upon completing my Bachelor's degree, I worked as an undergraduate admissions recruiter at Middle Georgia State University (MGA), and then an Academic Advisor for teacher education programs at the University's School of Education. Post completion of my Master's degree, I had the opportunity to teach high school ELA at a charter school in New Jersey, before joining the community at Valencia in 2018.

At Valencia, I have worked with students in both student services and the classroom. As a leader in Enrollment Services, I assisted in overseeing and supporting a staff of Enrollment Advisors who guided students through the entirety of the enrollment process (admissions, financial aid, residency, transcripts/records, and graduation). As a part-time faculty member in the West Communications department, I am privileged to assist beginning college students with developing academic reading and writing skills through Freshman Composition coursework.

In addition to these roles, I have also made the decision to return to graduate school and focus on completing a Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum & Instruction at the University of Central Florida. Some of my research interests include male literacy, masculinity in schools, increasing achievement for first-generation students, and English/language arts teacher preparation.
