Solving the Mystery of the Mayan Code and Calendar of 2012

On Wednesday, Nov. 14th, 2012 as part of the US State Dept. initiative International Education Week, I facilitated a workshop on the the Mayan writing and calendar systems on east campus (with livestream viewing to west). The Ancient Maya had sophisticated ways of marking time and artistic ways of recording their history. In this workshop participants used their own birthdates to gain an understanding of the Mayan calendar systems and then counted down to the completion of the 13th Bak'tuun which occured in December 2012. Participants also came to appreciate the phonetic qualities of the Mayan hieroglyph system using their own names to create coded hieroglyphs. *All workshop materials were provided, and participants were encouraged to arrive with digital technology including smartphones, tablets, or laptops to access internet enhancements.
