Ms. Carla DelVillaggio
Lyric Soprano, Carla DelVillaggio has been critically acclaimed for her superb interpretations of leading roles in operas such as Les Contes d'Hoffmann, La Bohème, Carmen, Die Fledermaus, and La Cenerentola. Her voice is rich and fiery and she brings a certain sensuality to many of the roles she plays. She is a consummate actress and a natural comedienne with impeccable comic timing. Critics have compared her to the likes of Bette Midler and Carol Burnett. Her stage presence is powerful, expressive, and energetic.While living in the Baltimore metropolitan area she appeared in productions of La Traviata, The Merry Widow, Il Trovatore, Adriana Lecouvreur, Susannah, The Mother of Us All, and The Three Penny Opera. Ms. DelVillaggio has also appeared with the Orlando Opera Company, Baltimore Opera Company, Annapolis Opera Company, Opera Camerata of Washington, Summer Opera Theatre Company (D.C.) and Tri-Cities Opera Company. She is frequently heard in concert and orchestral repertoire performing Operetta favorites as well as the classics of the American Musical Theatre, featuring the works of Gershwin, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Kern, Bernstein and Sondheim. Ms. DelVillaggio has been seen in a variety of "crossover roles", including the role of Anya in a production of "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off", Neil Simon's play "Come Blow Your Horn" (both while attending Seminole Community College) and one of her favorite roles – Lalume in the musical "Kismet".
She has had the opportunity to produce and direct concerts of operatic and musical theatre excerpts over the years and enjoys this second only to being onstage herself.
While a member of Tri-Cities Opera's "Artist Resident Training Program", Ms. DelVillaggio attended the State University of New York-Binghamton where she earned her Master of Music degree, with an Opera Specialization. In 1998, she was one of 8 singers chosen to participate in Florida Grand Opera's first-ever "Advanced Role Preparation Studio", where she studied the roles of Nedda in Pagliacci and Violetta in La Traviata with stage director Bernard Uzan and internationally known soprano Diana Soviero. In 2001 she made her European debut in the Czech Republic, singing the title role in La Traviata. That same year she had the great honor of singing at a joint event for Czech, Slovak and American dignitaries, including the head of the Czech Senate and Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State. Ms. DelVillaggio has been honored by her alma mater, Seminole Community College, by being awarded a "Distinguished Alumni" award, in recognition of her contribution and commitment to her art. In 2006 she was the Soprano Soloist for the Messiah Choral Society.
She has been the featured soprano soloist in numerous concerts at Valencia Community College, performs on the Faculty Recital each Spring and has also been a guest soloist with the VCC Jazz Band.
Ms DelVillaggio graduated from Seminole Community College, University of Central Florida and the State University of New York, Binghamton - with a Master's Degree in Vocal Performance with an Opera Specialization.
Now beginning her 6th year on the voice faculties of Valencia Community College, Ms DelVillaggio also maintains a private voice studio in her home. Her teaching credits at Valencia include classes in Music Appreciation, Music Theory, Voice Class, Private Voice Lessons, Music Literature, Contemporary Ensemble, Vocal Performance Lab and Opera-Theatre Workshop. Ms. DelVillaggio developed VCC’s first ever Opera-Theatre Workshop back in the Spring 2005 semester. It had very humble beginnings, but has grown to become the music department's most popular ensemble class, and typically has a waiting list of students eager to register for it. It has proven to be a wonderful addition to the overall training of the voice and theatre students at VCC. When she's not teaching, Ms DelVillaggio is an AWARD WINNING Barbra Streisand Tribute Artist and travels all over the country presenting her show "Then and Now...The Artistry of Barbra Streisand".
