Crystal Smith

Associate Professor of English

Professor Crystal Smith is a native Floridian and graduate of Bishop Moore Catholic High School. She has Bachelor of Arts degrees in American Studies and English from Stetson University in Deland, FL. Throughout her Stetson career, Crystal was an active advocate for various social causes, chief among them the rights of disabled students and faculty.

She founded the first disabled student organization in Stetson history, the Association of Disabled Advocates. Crystal truly fell in love with Deland and the Stetson community so much that she stayed there for her Masters work. In her thesis, she examines how Flannery O’Connor’s fictional perception of the body and personal disabled identity comes into focus by looking through the lens of French feminism.

As a professor, Crystal is a firm believer in constant open communication between student and teacher. She is a stringent advocate of tutoring and the Communications Center, where she proudly tutored in addition to teaching ENC 1101 and ENC 1102 on West Campus for three years. Currently, as of fall 2014, she teaches on the East Campus and volunteers for the Writing Center there as well.

Professor Smith believes writing only improves through drafting, however painfully. These days, Crystal is working on her creative writing and drinking too much coffee.
