Dr. Javier Garces

Professor & Program Director

I am Professor & Program Director for the Plant Science and Agricultural Technology Program. Courses I am responsible for or have taught include Environmental Science, Greenhouse Operations and Management, Introduction to Sustainable Agriculture, Introduction to Plant Science, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Plant Propagation, Principles of Hydroponics, and Types & Systems of Agricultural Operations.

I was born and raised in Miami, FL. After graduating high school, I moved to Gainesville to attend the University of Florida. Here, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in General Horticulture and then went on to graduate school to obtain a Doctor of Plant Medicine degree. Prior to my position here at Valencia, I worked for a company that had two farms specializing in woody ornamental plant production. I was “Plant Health Specialist” for approximately 1600 acres of containerized plant production. I am a farmer at heart at still like to keep one foot in the horticulture industry by visiting farms/nurseries to consult with farmers on how to better grow their crops.
