Dr. John Hilston

Adjunct Faculty - Economics

John Hilston earned a B.S. in Industrial Management from Grove City (PA) College (1996). At Grove City, he studied under G. Dirk Mateer and Walter E. Williams. After graduating from Grove City, John worked as a Project Engineer, Real Estate Tax Specialist, and Insurance Statistical Analyst. While working in these various positions, he earned an M.A. in Economics from Cleveland State University (1998). After teaching Economics part-time for a year, John decided to make this interest his full-time career.

He taught for two years at six different Cleveland/Akron, OH, area institutions. John is presently a Professor of Economics and History at Eastern Florida State College in Palm Bay, FL. He completed his Ed.D in Educational Leadership at University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL (2010). John then completed graduate coursework in American History at University of Central Florida, Immaculata (PA) University and La Salle University (at the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge). His academic interests include the economics of public policy and college faculty political diversity.

In his spare time, John enjoys cheering for his beloved Cleveland and Ohio sports teams, and traveling (he has been to fifty state capitols and twenty countries). He also likes golf - even though golf doesn't seem to like him. If you're ever planning a trip to Central Florida, John would be happy to offer his wisdom. He considers himself a theme park and beach expert!

Personal: John is married to Dana...and they have three wonderful children - Alexa (age 20), James (age 17), and Peter (age 15). They also have two cats – Reagan and Winston.

John enjoys teaching for Valencia College and has taught part-time at Valencia since 2002. He has served on a Florida higher education Board of Governors committee tasked with developing statewide objectives for civics education. John was recently honored with the Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education. Leavey Award recipients are chosen by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, PA. Founded in 1949 by E.F. Hutton, Don Belding, Kenneth Wells, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Freedoms Foundation is a national educational non-profit that facilitates programs to encourage engaged, responsible citizenship.
