Mrs. Jessica Anfinson (Sobkowiak)

Professor, Mathematics

A little about me: I grew up thinking I would either become a nurse or a teacher, at the suggestion of my very influential Colombian-American mother, and since I couldn't stomach the hospital liquids and smells while volunteering in high school, I chose teaching. Originally an elementary education major at a community college in south Florida, I soon realized I had a passion for helping classmates succeed in math courses and a wonderfully engaging math professor inspired and challenged me to major in Math instead. Fast forward 6 years, three degrees and an 82 page Master's Thesis, and I began living the dream--teaching math at the community college level in August 2009. After 3 years of doing what I love in America, I decided to embark on a new adventure of teaching overseas as a volunteer math teacher in Sudan, Kyrgyzstan, and Senegal for the next 3 years. It was a lovely and rewarding learning/teaching experience and I made a lot of friends, tried many new foods and even learned a little bit of Arabic, Russian, Kyrgyz, French, and Wolof during my trips to the villages with friends and students. In June 2015, I returned to America and was offered a job as a math professor at Valencia College's West Campus. I love what I do and am passionate about helping students cultivate growth mindsets to help them overcome any math anxiety or mental blocks that they may have while learning and exploring the beautiful language of the universe that is mathematics. :)
