Jorge Alberto Valladares

Professor, Psychology

My Professional Life:
I have been employed with Valencia College since 2010 and I consider myself a “homegrown” Valencia faculty member. I have held several roles in academic affairs including Answer Center Specialist, Academic Advisor, and Coordinator, Office for Students with Disabilities. I began teaching psychology and the New Student Experience course (SLS 1122) part-time in 2014, and then transitioned to full-time Professor of New Student Experience in 2015. In 2017, I served as Professor of Psychology at Poinciana campus and returned to the Osceola campus as Professor of Psychology in the fall 2019, which is where I currently serve. In addition to my work as an educator, I also provide individual, relationship, and family psychotherapy in private practice.

My Education:
I earned and Associate in Associate in Arts in General Studies, right here, at Valencia College. I then transferred to Rollins College to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Behavior. I have two Master's degrees - a Master of Science in General Psychology from Nova Southeastern University, and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rollins College. Each of my graduate degrees served a specific purpose - one prepared me to work with students as a professor of psychology, and the other prepared me to work with clients as a mental health counselor. I am currently a registered mental health counselor intern (RMHCI) with the State of Florida and a National Certified Counselor with the National Board of Certified Counselors.

My Personal Life:
I live in Orlando with my wife, two daughters, and two dogs. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and I am a a fan of New York teams – Yankees, Jets, and Knicks. When I am not working or spending time with my family, I am making music or listening to music. I picked up a guitar for the first time at about 18-years of age, and I had not been able to put it down... until recently. I bought an electric bass and now I am obsessed with it. I enjoy a wide variety of musical styles and what I listen to and play changes like seasons.
