James V. Vrhovac

Professor of English

After a brief rest in the Army, I graduated with an A.A. from Valencia in 2000. I spent the next several years wandering and trying to find a career instead of a job. In 2009, I went back to finish school and graduated with a degree in English-Technical Communications.
This wayward path helped me find my true passion: teaching writing. While teaching writing may sound as exciting as watching plants grow, it is a subject and opportunity to engage with students in a brand new way every day.

My tenure (and now tenure-track!) at Valencia has opened a world of understanding and collaboration. From working with students from rich and diverse backgrounds to engaging in community work through the Peace and Justice Institute, I have learned to value that everyone has something to bring to the table and deserves a place there.

My current projects focus on sustainability issues on and off campus and using Table top roleplaying games as a framework to teach critical thinking and writing. I have always been pretty nerdy in general but have found lately great benefit in combining the two. Using the Basic Dungeons and Dragons rules system as a framework of inquiry for students, I have been surprised with the amount of flexibility for learning and motivation students experience in exploring a collaborative story environment. The level of engagement in the course my students show has been the single most rewarding aspect of this experiment.
