Kirsten Holt

"Kirsten Holt received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Central Florida in 2013. Her chapbook of poetry, Overwintered, is available from Yellowjacket Press. Recent work can be found in Orion, The Fairytale Review, The Louisville Review, Portland Review, Animal: A Beast of a Literary Magazine, and forthcoming in the Anthology: Glass Bottom Sky. She has worked as the managing editor for The Florida Review and Sweet: A Literary Confection."

Though I received my primary degree in poetry (links to work found below) I have academic interests outside verse. I was initially a physics major with a specialization in astrophysics and astronomy. You'll see some of that present in both my writing, and how I help students make sense of their work. I have a vested interest in the study of video games as contemporary literature, and gave a presentation at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs national conference in Boston 2013, link below. I will be giving a similar presentation on multimodality next year in Los Angeles.

Outside academia, I play quite a lot of video games (RPGs, Survival, Puzzle, Platform, and FPS mostly. I'm not a fan of MMOs or MOBAs). My favorite series are Dragon Age, Dark Souls, Skyrim, Bioshock, and recently I've played through Alien:Isolation and Life is Strange. I'm interested in the intersectionality between horror and literature, so if you'd like to discuss how horror is used in movies and tv shows, let's do that. In addition to all of that, I do cosplay. That means I dress up and go to anime and comic book conventions. I find that making the costumes is a great way to get my head out of the books and focus on practical skills, and let's be honest, wearing wigs and makeup and pretending to shoot lightning on the weekends is just fun.

I look forward to seeing you in my classes and finding a way for you to own and love your education as much as I have.
