Marci Dial, DNP, MSN, BSN, PMGT-BC, CHSE, LNC

Dr. Marci Dial is a graduate of the Nursing Program at Valencia College, in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Dial holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing from the University of Central Florida. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and completed her studies as an Adult Nurse Practitioner at the University of Central Florida. She received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Her doctoral work focused on examining Experiential Learning Theory and the Use of Simulation as an Educational Modality to Examine the Role of Situational Awareness and Medication Errors in the Role of Patient Safety with prelicensure nursing students. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Central Florida with a research focus examining mindfulness and simulation-based learning in pre-licensure nursing students.

Dr. Dial is one of the Florida Simulation Health Care Alliance’s contributing authors responsible for writing and implementing the faculty development course addressing Facilitation and Debriefing, Experiential Learning, and Adult Learning Theory.

She is one of twelve Nursing Simulation Leaders in the National League for Nursing’s Simulation Leadership Academy, 2017 Cohort. She has presented with her NLN Simulation Team at Duke University School of Nursing’s Pursuing Radical Transformation in Health Professions Education: The Science of Learning. She and her colleagues from the NLN Simulation team continue to research mindfulness in simulation pre-briefing and its impact on clinical decision-making.

In 2017, she and four of her colleagues from Valencia's Nursing Program were recognized as Distinguished Scholars in the Valencia Foundation's Endowed Chairs for Learning Leadership Program and were awarded the Harry J. and E. Mary Hobbs Teaching Chair in Nursing to implement a Health Assessment virtual simulation platform across both the Traditional and Accelerated Nursing Tracks.

Dr. Dial has over 25 years of experience in nursing and has worked in academia for over 17 years. She is a Nationally Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE), and a Board-Certified Pain Management Nurse (PMGT-BC). Dr. Dial has volunteered for 14 years as a Nurse Practitioner in a community health clinic providing primary care to uninsured and underinsured patients. She is a volunteer faculty member for the UCF College of Medicine since 2010. She serves on multiple committees for numerous professional nursing organizations. She serves on the Valencia College Alumni Advisory Board and is Health Policy Board Service Certified through the Florida Center for Nursing’s Action Coalition. Dr. Dial is a faculty mentor for the LifeMap certification program at Valencia. She and two of her fellow faculty members serve as the faculty advisors for the Valencia College Nursing Student Association (VNSA).

She has had the privilege of being part of the Editorial Advisory Board that worked with the Laerdal design team to develop the vSim Assessment virtual simulation platform. Dr. Dial’s work with the vSim Assessment Team was recognized by the American Journal of Nursing by being selected as the 2016 winner in the Digital Product Book of the Year Awards.

She has contributed to the review of numerous nursing textbooks, simulation resources, pharmacology resources, and the design of multiple electronic learning resources. She has also co-authored two sections in a clinical simulation textbook for advanced nursing practice.

She has shared her expertise in the area of conceptual teaching and learning to contribute to the completion of the vSim Conceptual Mapping for the State of Virginia’s proposed concept-based curriculum along with the concept mapping for the vSim Gerontology platform.

Dr. Dial developed the Nursing Civility Charter activities and is an advocate for raising awareness about the cultivation of Civility in academia and within the profession of nursing. She has worked on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Advisory Committee for Workplace Violence and Incivility Professional Issues Panel, the Florida Nurses Association (FNA) Workforce Violence Task Force, and the Horizontal Violence Task Force. She has presented in the academic and healthcare industry settings on the topic of Civility and its impact in classroom environments and in practice as it relates to patient safety.
