Dr. Matthew Kenney

Professor of Business

Matthew Kenney, D.B.A., JD, is a tenured Professor of Business and current John and Florence MacLeod Chair in Business. He grew up working in his family business and launched his own venture at the age of 23.

His first venture was a contract manufacturing company -- outsourcing the production of old family recipes to large manufacturers (who made the products to specifications). He then sold the finished products to supermarkets and restaurant chains throughout New England.

This venture led to the creation of a manufacturing business, and eventually a consulting practice where he helped food service companies develop new revenue streams, launch new products and enhance marketing efficiency by reducing waste.

While earning his MBA, he became VP of Operations for a private-equity funded company within the grocery industry. After earning his MBA in Global Economics (with a Marketing specialization), he accepted the position of Entrepreneur-in-Residence for Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. This position led to his professional career as an educator.

He has also earned a Doctor of Business Administration (D.B.A) degree from Nova Southeastern University; and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Florida A&M University's College of Law in Orlando. He is formerly a Florida Supreme Court Certified County Mediator.

Prior to joining Valencia College, Dr. Kenney was Founder and President of Kenney College -- a boutique graduate school licensed by the Florida Department of Education to award the Master of Business Administration degree.

He was an Executive Producer of the PBS documentary "The Amazing Life and Times of Austin T. Levy", a documentary on the importance of compassionate capitalism; and treating employees with honor and respect. He is the author of several books and numerous peer-reviewed journal articles.

An active researcher, primarily applying ethnography and phenomenology research methods in workplaces, Dr. Kenney has helped employers achieve significant increases in employee productivity and job satisfaction. Several of his case studies are used by college professors globally to illustrate the integration of business theory and practice, and he has consulted with companies on issues related to management, innovation and corporate entrepreneurship.

Dr. Kenney is a member of the Florida Bar. He looks forward to helping Valencia College students get the most of their talents, and helping employers throughout Central Florida gain access to the best and brightest students in the job market.
