Dr. Anthony Mellone

Professor of Chemistry

Biography and Teaching Philosophy of Anthony Mellone

I was born in St. Louis, Missouri. People call me Tony. I enjoy just about all outdoor activities, especially water sports.

I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. I worked for Washington University for three years as a research technician before attending graduate school at the University of Florida. I earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from UF in 1989. My dissertation was “Rapid Screening for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Using Laser-Excited Fluorescence”.

After graduate school, I worked for Murex Corporation, a small biotechnology company in Atlanta, for a little over a year before accepting an assistant professor position at the University of West Florida in the Center for Environmental Diagnostics and Bioremediation, which was located at an Environmental Protection Agency facility on Pensacola Beach. I was a Professor of Chemistry for Okaloosa-Walton Community College from 1995 to 1998. I also taught in several adjunct positions at Pensacola Junior College, the University of West Florida, and Okaloosa-Walton Community College during this time and through 2000.

In January, 2001, Valencia Community College, now Valencia College, hired me as a Chemistry Professor, and awarded me tenure in 2003.

Learning chemistry does not involve memorizing facts. What you learn in chemistry class is much more important: using skills to solve problems. The way one learns to solve problems is by getting started. The important skills you learn in chemistry class you will learn by working chemistry problems.
