In composition I, students write essays that involve: body language observation, breaking a social norm, and film analysis. Students write 4 essays: definition, narrative, descriptive, and argument. MLA format and sources are required for all 4 essay assignments. Drafting of essays and skill-building take place in the Blackboard discussion boards, where students are asked to share and provide feedback on each other's work. No book is currently required. Students will download and print weekly packets from Blackboard.

ENC 1102
My composition II courses engage in examining the way our histories have been differently shaped by literary voices ranging from the late 1800s through the early 2000s. We examine voices such as Sojourner Truth, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Zora Neale Hurston, Bob Dylan, Pat Mora, Tato Laviera, Ani Difranco, Don DeLillo, Junot Diaz, and Nikki Giovanni. This course suggests that literature exists not just as art or entertainment but more so as a way of understanding our past histories outside of the history textbook. We also attempt to discover the meaning these texts have in relation to our present. To accomplish this, students write a comparative literary analysis paper as their final project comparing a piece of literature from our syllabus to video games, films, television shows, music, or current events.

American Literature I
In this course, students are asked to consider competing understanding of history and philosophy through primary and literary sources. Students in this class engage in writing assignments in the discussion board area of BB on a bi-weekly basis. In these discussion boards, students are asked to do research on both the literature and the major themes addressed in class, create mini-essays, and engage with each other through responses. A final major writing and audiovisual assignment is assigned toward the end of the semester. No book is required for this class. A master document of all the readings is provided on Blackboard, and students are expected to download and print this document.
