Syllabi for Brantley

BSC 1010C - Fundamentals of Biology I

Fall 2012

REQUIRED TEXT:

Biology: Volume I second custom edition for Valencia College (with student access code) from Reece, et. al.  Campbell Biology, 9th Edition (2011).  Benjamin/Cummings.

This textbook comes with access to MasteringBiology, which is an excellent source of information, review questions, tutorials, and activities that will help you with this course. (The activities also count for 100 of your 900 course points).  You’ll need to register using the course code: BRANTLEYFALL2012

GRADING SCALE:

Your grade will be based on 4 lecture exams (100 points each), 1 final lecture exam (100 points), 10 lab quizzes (10 points each), 2 laboratory practical exams (100 points each) and 10 MasteringBiology assignments (10 points each) totaling 900 points for the course.  The quizzes will be given during the first 10 minutes of the lab and will examine your knowledge of the material covered the previous week as well as your understanding of what is to be covered in the current lab for that new week.  The lecture and lab practical exams will cover only that material that has been presented since the previous exam.  The final lecture exam, however, will be comprehensive in nature covering ALL of the material reviewed in the entire course.  Should you perform better on the final lecture exam than one of your previous lecture exams, I will drop the score of the lower lecture exam and replace it with your final lecture exam grade (essentially allowing the final lecture exam to count twice).  However, you must take the Lecture Final Exam as failure to do so will earn you a grade of F for the course.

The Grading Scale is based on a percentage of the 900 points possible

             90-100% = A

             80 - 89% = B

             70 - 79% = C

             60 - 69% = D

                 < 60% = F
