My English Lab: Writing, Level 3 online lab key- sold by the Valencia College Bookstore)

Prerequisite: Demonstration of required level of English proficiency or minimum grades of “C” in EAP 340C and EAP 460C. Prerequisite or Corequisite: EAP 460C.

Course Description/Objective: Students develop the ability to use writing-related technology and plan, write, revise, and edit sentences, paragraphs, and essays at the intermediate level. Passing a

departmental final exam and having a minimum grade of “C” is required for successful completion.

Other Objectives: In addition to specific EAP objectives, the course will reinforce the following competencies wholly or partially.

Valencia Competencies: Valencia has defined four interrelated competencies that prepare students to succeed in the world community: (1) think, (2) value, (3) act, and (4) communicate. The college catalog outlines these competencies. The activities in this course will further develop your mastery of the four core competencies.

CLAS: Evidence of College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) is a graduation requirement. To the extent possible, you will be encouraged to develop reading skills, essay skills, and English language skills as part of your work in this course. Additional information is available in the current Valencia College Catalog.

Attendance /Tardiness / Withdrawal Policy:

Regularity in classroom attendance and punctuality is vital to academic success. Students who do not maintain regular attendance and who fall behind in their work are subject to withdrawal by the instructor. A student may withdraw in Atlas at any time during the term. Students will receive a W if withdrawn by withdraw deadline, July 10, 2015. See college calendar. After this date, if a student withdraws or is withdrawn by the professor for excessive absences or other reasons, the professor will assign a grade of WP (withdrawn passing) or WF (withdrawn failing), based upon the student’s academic achievement in the class as of the last day of attendance. W and WP will not be counted in the grade point average. WF will be calculated as an F in the grade point average. When a student has been absent three times, the instructor can withdraw the student from the class. When a student is 15 minutes late, it counts as ½ of an absence and a loss of points. If you are not here, the instructor does not repeat classes for you. Consequently, you lose the needed information. Also, it is not the responsibility of the college to replace lost classes. If a student informs the instructor that a class will be missed, this does not constitute an excuse, and the instructor will not give an excuse for you. Absence is not an excuse for not knowing your assignments, tests, or changes in the syllabus. You are encouraged to make strong acquaintances and practice English with your fellow classmates.

Students are to stay for the entire class period. Otherwise, the student is marked absent.

No-Show Policy: A student who does not attend the first two class meetings will be marked No-Show and will be officially withdrawn from the class during the No Show Reporting Period. There will be no exceptions. If you are withdrawn as a “no show,” you will be financially responsible for the class and a ‘W’ will appear on your transcript for the course. In order to get a refund for the course, students must withdraw from the class in Atlas by the Drop/Refund Deadline on May 18, 2015 at 11:59 P.M.; after that date, refunds will not be issued.

Important Note for International Students (F-1 or J-1 Visa):

Please be advised that withdrawal from this course may negatively impact your visa status.  Consult the International Student Services office for more information on full-time enrollment requirements.

Absence due to Illness: If you are absent due to illness, you are responsible for the material covered in class and for any announcements made in class. Classes are not repeated by the professor or the college. Three absences will be allowed, but students may be officially withdrawn from the course after three absences. You may make up any missed class test, quiz, or assignment with official written documentation of illness or emergency – physician note, document of hospitalization – is provided either in advance or by the class period upon your return. It is your responsibility to inform Dr. Holman of your absence in advance or as soon as possible. In the case of an illness or absence greater than three class periods, continuation in the course will be determined on a case-by-case basis and by discretion of the professor, but usually, the student is withdrawn. Any tests, quizzes, or assignments missed during an absence must be completed in a timely manner, usually by the next class period following a return to class. Any assignments not completed will receive a grade of zero toward the final grade.

Valencia College rule: There is no food in class. If you do not comply with college rules, you will need to leave class.

Note: The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the class syllabus whenever it is necessary; students are responsible for keeping up with them.

Grading Scale:

A = 90 –100                                                         Final Exam  = 25%   of one’s grade

B = 80 – 89                                                     Midterm Exam  = 15%   of one’s grade

C = 70 – 79                                                                      Lab  = 10%   of one’s grade

D = 60 – 69           Homework, Quizzes, and In Class Writing = 50%   of one’s grade

F =   0 – 59                                                                                100%

     Note: a passing score on the final exam is required to complete this course.

Homework, Tests, and Quizzes:

Assignments: You are required to complete all assignments for this class. All assignments that are collected and graded become part of your final course grade; any assignment that is not completed will receive a grade of zero. All homework assignments should be completed, prepared and turned in at the beginning of class, not during class. Assignments should be hand-written in pen (dark-blue or black ink), (NOT PENCIL) and should follow Dr. Holman’s formatting guidelines per assignment.

If an assignment is not ready to be turned in at the beginning of class and correctly formatted that assignment will not be accepted later in the class period or that day.

Lab Work: Lab work is required in EAP 440C. Lab work will consist of completing exercises online and revisions of essays in the Writing Center. To earn full credit for the lab assignments, you must complete all assignments. There will be no makeup labs. Any lab not completed will earn a zero.

In-Class and homework writing assignments: In-class writing assignments must also follow an appropriate format and will be written on standard 8½ x 11 college-ruled paper. If you are absent from class during an in-class writing assignment and you bring in a note because of a medical condition, you may sometimes arrange with me to complete that writing assignment in the prior to the next class period. There will be no exceptions. It is your responsibility to make arrangements with me to complete this writing assignment; I will not remind you of missed writing assignments. Any missed writing assignments will earn a zero. Any missed writings will negatively affect your learning and ultimately your overall grade in this course.

Essay Revisions: Some writing assignments will undergo revisions when the instructor deems that the writing was not at the required level of achievement. Students may seek assistance with revisions in the Writing Center, 5-155 to complete the assignment. The assignment has to be returned by the next day of class. Also, the original writing has to accompany it. Redone writing is “C” at the highest.

Expected Student Conduct: Valencia College is dedicated not only to the advancement of knowledge and learning. It is also concerned with the development of responsible personal and social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia College, a student assumes the responsibility for becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct. The primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the faculty. Students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the faculty to leave the class. Violation of any classroom or Valencia’s rules may lead to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from Valencia. Disciplinary action could include being withdrawn from class, disciplinary warning, probation, suspension, expulsion, or other appropriate and authorized actions. You will find the Student Code of Conduct in the current Valencia Student Handbook.

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty: This course is designed to improve YOUR ability to write. Therefore, you must complete assignments alone and individually. Any submitted work that is not created and written by you means that it has been copied or plagiarized. Copying another student’s work or allowing someone to copy your work is cheating. Also, plagiarism is the act of taking and copying someone else's ideas or words – information from a magazine, book, or the internet, for example – and turning it in as your own work. Cheating and plagiarism are detrimental to your learning and will not be tolerated. You must complete assignments individually unless I state otherwise. If any work, information, assignments, or tests or quizzes are copied from another student or source, any students involved will receive a zero on that assignment. If this happens a second time, any students involved will receive an “F” in the course. If you copy information from any outside resource such as a book, magazine, or Internet, the assignment that contains that copied material will also earn a grade of zero. If this happens a second time, you will receive an “F” in the course. Go to http://valenciacollege.edu/generalcounsel/policy/, Volume 8: Students, and read Valencia College’s policies on Academic Dishonesty.

Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the instructor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities. The West Campus Office is located in building SSB room 102.
