Valencia’s Core Competencies. These competencies prepare students for success in and beyond college.  They are outlined in the College Catalog, but here is how I see them.

Think: Critical thinking skills = Success.  Self reflection improves your thoughts and behaviors.  Question and consider everything with an open mind.

Value:  The world is narrow and incomplete if seen from one viewpoint.  When you share your views, seek and respect the viewpoints of others, you learn the joy of a shared humanity.

Communicate: If you do not communicate, you are alone.  Speaking and writing are distinct talents that allow you to control your thoughts, your actions, and the world around you.

Act: Actions define your character to others. Positive actions foster growth and evolution.

Requirements:  In order to pass this course with a grade of C, you must satisfactorily fulfill the following requirements:

            *           Satisfactorily complete all assignments.

            *           Maintain regular attendance and active participation in class.

*          Complete all homework assignments (reading and writing).

Attendance:    You are expected to come to every class.  If you are absent and miss an assignment or lecture notes, it is your responsibility to get the material from another student or WebCt.  If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, you may e-mail it to me at .  If you e-mail an assignment, and I have not replied to your e-mail within 24 hours, check the e-mail address and send it again.  I read and reply to e-mail every single weekday, so I will not accept excuses like “I e-mailed the paper but I forgot to check that it went through.”  Be aware that I will only accept ONE e-mailed assignment per student, so use this only in an emergency and don’t get in the habit of missing class and thinking you can e-mail your assignments.  Also, be sure you e-mail the assignment early enough so that I will receive it on the due date. If I receive it after the due date, it will be subject to late paper penalties

Papers:   All assignments must be typed, double spaced, and handed in on time on the day they are due.  Late papers will be docked one letter grade per day, no exceptions.  All essays, except the timed writings, must have quotes from sources such as the textbook, as well as a Works Cited page. An essay without quotes will receive a 10 point deduction.  An essay without a Works Cited page will receive a 10 point deduction.  You will receive guidelines for quoting and documenting sources. Bring 2 copies of your papers for workshop. Workshop counts for a grade, so be sure to come to class and bring your papers or you will lose 5 points.

NOTE:  RESEARCH PAPERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED LATE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.   IN ORDER TO PASS THIS CLASS, YOU MUST WRITE ALL MAJOR PAPERS AND THE RESEARCH PAPER.

Grades:            All assignments will be evaluated on the basis of a numerical scale.

                                    100-90             A

                                    89-80              B

                                    79-70              C

                                    69-60              D

                                    59-0                F

Your final grade will be determined as follows:

Journals:     There will be journal assignments posted that will deal with the readings assigned.

Quizzes:   There may be periodic quizzes based on both the readings assigned from all three books, and some of the lecture notes I have included in the course.

Plagiarism:     Plagiarism is a serious offense which may result in failing the assignment or the class.  The College’s plagiarism policy and procedures will be followed.  A student is expected to be honest in all of his or her academic courseware and activities.  Academic dishonesty such as cheating of any kind on examinations, course assignments, or projects; plagiarism, misrepresentation; and the unauthorized possession of examinations or other course-related materials is prohibited.  Plagiarism is unacceptable to the College community.  Academic work submitted by students is assumed to be the result of their own thought, research, or self-expression.  When students borrow ideas, wording, or organization from another source, they are expected to acknowledge that fact in an appropriate manner.  Plagiarism is the deliberate use and appropriation of another’s work without identifying the source and trying to pass off such work as the student’s own.  Any student who fails to give full credit for ideas or materials taken from another has plagiarized. When cheating or plagiarism has occurred, the instructor m ay take academic action ranging from denial of credit for or assigning a grade of “F” on a specific assignment, examination, or project, to assigning a grade of ”F” for the course.  The student may also be subject to further sanctions such as disciplinary probation, suspension or dismissal from the College.

Research papers:  Must be a minimum of 1500 words. You are free to choose your topic; however, it must be an argumentative-persuasive paper, and you must give me your topic proposal before you write the paper. RESEARCH PAPERS ARE NOT ACCEPTED LATE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  Research papers must have quotes from sources other than your own brain, must include a Works Cited page, and must be in MLA format. You will be given guidelines for documenting sources and preparing a Works Cited page. Be sure to follow them. You will also give a brief presentation of your findings to the class.

Extra Credit:  I never give extra credit assignments.

  • Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a letter from the office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the professor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. The office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities (Winter Park Campus, room 203; (407) 582 6887).
