Course Schedule and Assignments

Week 1 = ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 8/28 at 11:59PM

  1. Read the syllabus and Course Structure and Navigation in the Orientation Module. 
  2. Watch the video "How the class works" in the Orientation Module.
  3. Take the Orientation Quiz in the Orientation Module.
  4. Briefly introduce yourself in the Introduction Discussion in the module. Please give your name, what you expect from the course and why you took it, and add any personal information that you would like.
  5. Read the Epic of Gilgamesh on Canvas in Module One.
  6. Watch the video lessons on Myth and Gilgamesh
  7. Take the quiz on Gilgamesh.
  8.  Start taking notes for your final paper. Near the end of the semester, you will write a 3 page paper (or longer) that has three parts. You will have to do the following by using specific examples and quotations from the works we read. Start collecting those examples and quotations now:   

        A. Define "myth" based on your readings, the textbook, and the video lectures. (this   

          section should be about 1 page).     

        B. Define "hero" based on your readings, the textbook, and the video lectures.

        (this section should be about 1 page)       

         C. Explain which approach or theory of myth is the best. (this section should            be about  1 page)       

Week 2  = ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 9/4 at 11:59PM

  1. Read the textbook Chapter Two: Creation (skip Chapter One for now)
  2. Go to the Library Webpage. Under Databases A-Z, find E-Book Central, Search for Ancient Egyptian Literature : An Anthology. When you find this exact title, go to page 36 OR search for "The Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor". Read this story.  
  3. In the same book, read The Tale of Sinuhe.
  4. Watch the videos in Module 2.
  5.  Take the quizzes in Module 2.

Week 3 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 9/11 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Chapter Three in the Textbook
  2. Read the Early Flood Myths in Module 3
  3. Watch the videos in the module.
  4. Take the quizzes

 

Week 4 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 9/18 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Hesiod's Theogony
  2. Read Chapter Four of the textbook (skip Three for now)
  3. On Canvas, I've created an assignment under Content in Module Three called "Who is the hero of the Theogony and why?". Answer that question by writing one paragraph or so explaining why. In your paragraph, quote a passage that helps support your argument.
  4. Watch the videos in the module.
  5. Take the quizzes

 

Week 5 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 9/25 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Chapter Nine in the textbook.
  2. Read The Odyssey Books 1-5 for Wednesday. 
  3. Watch the videos in the module.
  4. Take the Quizzes in the module.

 

Week 6 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 10/2 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Odyssey 6-8.  
  2. Achilles's name means "anger of the people." What does Odysseus's name mean? Find and write down the quotation from our translation. This is an ongoing assignment - it may not necessarily be in this week's readings, but look carefully.
  3.  Read Chapter Five of the textbook.
  4.  Watch the videos in the module.
  5. Take the quizzes in the module.

Week 7 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 10/9 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Odyssey 10-12. Take notes on the major characters and the plot b/c there will be a quiz on the Odyssey when you are finished the whole thing.
  2. Read Chapter Six of the textbook.
  3.  Watch the videos in the module.
  4. Take the quizzes in the module.

 

Week 8 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 10/16 at 11:59PM

  1. Read Odyssey 13-24.
  2. Read Chapter Seven of the textbook.
  3. Read the text called Trojan Cycle on Canvas
  4. Watch the videos in the module.
  5. Take the quizzes in the module.
  1. name the goddess who prevents the Greeks from sailing to Troy
  2. explain in one sentence why the Greeks are unable to sail to Troy
  3. write down the one word that explains why the goddess won't let them sail.
  4. Read Chapter 1 of the Textbook. This is an introduction to a psycho-analytic approach to myth. We will be going over that as soon as possible, but take notes so you have some background. The topics and people mentioned in that introduction will be important to the class.

 

Week 9 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 10/23 at 11:59PM

  1. Take the Midterm Exam
  2. Read Greek Tragedy in New Translation: Medea by  Euripides translated by Collier, Michael and Machemer, Georgia
  3.  Read Antigone by Sophocles translated by Gibbons, Reginald and Segal, Charles

  4. Watch the videos
  5. Take the quizzes on Medea and Antigone  

 

Week 10 ALL WORK DUE BY FRIDAY 10/30 at 11:59PM

  1. Read the Wedding of Peleus and Thetis in Module Ten.
  2. Watch the videos in the module.
  3. Take the quizzes

 

Week 11 ALL WORK DUE 11/6 at 11:59PM

  1.  Read the selections from Hyginus in Module Eleven
  2.  Take notes: this is a great review for the final exam
  3. Watch the videos in the module.

Week 12 ALL WORK DUE 11/13 at 11:59PM

  1. Read the Document called Later Flood Myths under Content/Primary Sources. 
  2.  Watch the videos in the module.

  1. Read the Perseus and Herakles myths in Apollodorus's Library
  2. Read Chapter Eight in the textbook.
