Announcements for Dr. Stevens

suggested topics for writing assignments, 20th century

You are required to demonstrate adequate writing skills with no grammar/spelling errors; errors will count against you.  You must answer the question in essay format, citing the page reference and source.  Y ou must adequately develop your answer; I expect a minimum of 2-3 pages to justify your response to the question. Some of these topics may seem unfamiliar; these topics are suggestions to be used throughout the duration of the semester.  Periodically I will add to the list. You may also use the selections mailed directly to your Atlas account.

QUESTIONS

*  Connect with one particular scene in Night.  In what way is that particular experience significant to the overall work?  Explain why you chose that particular scene (use personal experience).

*  What were some of the reoccurring images used by Wiezel to connect the reader to the work and what purpose did those images serve? (literary device, allegorical reference etc)

*  From Joseph Heller?s Catch-22, explain Heller?s meaning and what the general population might have felt on reading this work.

*  Discuss American Abstract Expressionism in terms of artistic value in the American post-war cultural experience.  Does this movement really express freedom?  Why or why not? Were the artists brilliant or insane?

*  What does Sartre mean when he says existence precedes essence?  How is this an expression of his existentialism.  How is this different from traditional religious conceptions of existence and their understanding of the nature of rational behavior in humans?

*  Discuss the multiple layers of meaning in Langston Hugh?s Harlem, (Dream Deferred), how was his experience different from others in this period?

*  Why/How does Pop Art relate to the common consumer?  How was this movement a reflection of post-war American economic power?

*  From Napoleon Dynamite, was this film an example of ?theater of the absurd?, why or why not?

*  Closely examine Betye Saar?s work, The Liberation Aunt Jemima, discuss multiple image references and the intended meaning of each.

*  Discuss Alvin Toffler?s Future Shock, is this concept a reality by today?s standards? Why or why not?

*  From Chairman Mao?s Quotations, did Mao believe in the equality of gender, why or why not?

*  From Gene Kelly?s American in Paris, do you (in your opinion), believe that this film was a good example of the American post-war film musical?  Why or Why not, include suggestions, if applicable.
