About Professor Hoaglen
A graduate of Rollins College, I earned my Master of Liberal Studies in 2009 and Bachelor of Arts in Humanities in 2004. To further my content knowledge, I completed a Masters of Arts degree in English Literature at the University of West Florida in 2023.
I have instructed Humanities courses at Valencia College since 2009. I also teach Freshman English Composition and New Student Experience and manage the Communications Support Center at the Winter Park Campus. I consider myself a teacher for emerging learners. Although I enjoy all disciplines and time periods, my specialization is in poetry, classical studies, feminism, gender studies, and art history. My favorite philosophers are Plato and Foucault, and my favorite poet is Anne Sexton.
I have a long history at Valencia: I completed my A.A. at the East Campus and worked in the Testing Center on East Campus as a work-study. After graduating from Valencia, I began working full-time at Valencia. Just like many Valencia grads, I transferred to UCF in 2001 to work on a degree in business and then to Rollins College in 2003 for a degree in humanities. Throughout college, I earned scholarships and paid for my tuition and living expenses by working retail and in the Administrative Office at the Winter Park Campus. I can certainly empathize with students who juggle working and going to school!
After graduate school at Rollins College, my journey as an educator began--first instructing humanities courses at East and Winter Park Campuses as adjunct professor. Eventually, I obtained a position as an Senior English and Reading Teacher for Seminole County Public Schools. Teaching high school was a fun and rewarding experience. However, my ultimate career goals are continuing to move up the ladder at Valencia, earning a doctorate in literature, and publishing portions of my MA thesis and poetry book.
I look forward to sharing my passion for learning with you this semester!
Cheers!
Professor H.
