The theatre, which is no thing, but makes use of everything – gestures, sounds, words, screams, light, darkness – rediscovers itself at precisely the point where the mind requires a language to express its manifestations. To break through language in order to touch life is to create or recreate the theatre. – Antonin Artaud.

COURSE ORGANIZATION –

NOTE: Although an online class has no set meeting time, you should plan to sign on regularly to read lectures, participate in discussions and do assignments. I may withdraw you from class if you do not have meaningful academic participation at the start of the semester or if you have an extended period when you do not engage with the class. Make sure to communicate with me ahead of time if you know you will be unable to access our class for an extended period.

Please, be aware that the summer semester (12 weeks) is shorter than a regular semester (16 weeks). Therefore, you will be assigned more work each week. Some weeks will condense two weeks of work into one week. In other words, some weeks will include two (2) reading, discussions, and quizzes.

Each assignment opens on Sundays and closes on Saturday. You have a week to finish your assigned work. Therefore, late work is not accepted for any reason. Please do not put off your work until the last minute.

I will post announcements regarding the homework and assignments on a regular basis in canvas. I will keep you informed of new information, updates and upcoming quizzes, exams, and papers, and discussions.

Make sure you check the calendar, your emails and canvas daily. You need to keep yourself informed of all due dates and complete the activities, readings, and other assignments ON TIME. I will not accept any late work.

COURSE EVALUATION

1 Exam (Final): 100 points.

1 Performance assignment: 100 points.

Quizzes  and discussions (roughly, 21): 25 points each = 525 points possible
TOTAL = 725 (subject to change).

All reading assignments are on Pdfs in the files. There is no required book for this class.

Once we come close to the due date, more details will be announced. If theatres are opened, then you will watch a live performance. I will make any changes and arraignments for you to see a live performance if that is the case.

You will be required to complete an assignment and answer questions in separate paragraphs in response to the performance you watched before TUESDAY JUNE 16.

NOTES ABOUT COMPUTERS

Even though computers and word-processing software are time and energy-saving devices, they can and do cause problems with the production of your documents. Please be aware that a broken or ill-functioning computer, or the inability to retrieve, produce or submit your assignments from a computer will not be accepted as a valid excuse for a document that is submitted late. I highly recommend that you submit items earlier than the deadline, waiting until the last minute and having a technical problem will not excuse you from a test, quiz, project, or paper.

I WILL NOT ACCEPT LATE WORK DUE TO A COMPUTER MALFUNCTION!

If you email me at 9:55 pm when your quiz is due by 10 pm that same day, you should not expect a response from me before the deadline.
