I do not talk to parents on the phone nor return emails from parents for college students who are 18 or older.  Such students are legally considered to be adults and must communicate with professors themselves.  A federal law called FERPA does not allow me to speak to parents.

Core Competencies and College Level Academic Skills

The specific competencies that students will be expected to develop in this course are directly related to Valencia’s core competencies.  Refer to page 18 of the current Valencia College catalog for a complete explanation of the core competencies, which are Think, Value, Communicate, and Act.  Evidence of college-level skills in reading and writing and English language skills is a graduation requirement, and students must demonstrate their acquisition of those skills in all written work for this course

Textbooks

75 Readings Plus 10th edition (earlier used editions are fine and found cheaply on the Internet – have the book by Thursday of the second week of class)

Required Materials

A handbook for MLA formatting guidelines and for reference on grammar and the mechanical conventions of standard written English is in the bookstore.  Students are welcome to use the materials found online at the Purdue OWL for free.  They can buy the handbook if they want to.

Grading Policies

Students are expected to meet deadlines on the course class schedule

  1. Missed class – If you are going to be absent then do so responsibly.  Papers are still due on the due date.  Do NOT email your paper on the due date.  I WILL NOT GRADE NOR PRINT STUDENT PAPERS THAT ARE EMAILED TO ME.  I understand that emergencies can happen. So ONE time this semester students can turn in a FINAL paper after class starts.  Students are expected to leave class and complete that draft in the library, writing center or a computer lab on campus.  Take a hard copy of your Final Draft to 5-231 before 5 p.m. the next day after class (this will be a Wednesday or Friday).  This is the Communications Department and it closes promptly Monday through Friday at 5 p.m.  The department is not open on the weekends.
  2. Other than this one emergency late work is unacceptable and I will NOT take late work unless arrangements have been made with me.
  3. No other extensions on essays are made without an advance arrangement before the due date.
  4. Students MUST turn in a rough draft of each core paper in order to earn a grade for the final draft.

5.    Regular, on-time attendance is required of all students at Valencia College.  Attendance is recorded online each week.   Students are expected to sign onto the course website a minimum of two times a week to record work which will reflect attendance.  An excessive absence notification will be sent through the Atlas system when a student misses two classes. Students are dropped from the course after three absences.

Classroom Protocol

1.      A classroom is a space in which the distracting behaviors of one or two student can have a negative impact on the entire learning environment; therefore, distractions cannot be permitted.  See the Valencia Student Handbook for full detail of Valencia’s Code of Student Conduct.  Turn off cellphones and all other electronic equipment before class begins.

2.      Please turn off your cellphone/Blackberry/Ipod/any portable electronic communication or entertainment device while in class.

  1. Laptops are for academic assignments in this class only.  If I suspect a student is using a laptop for personal use or another class during the class session then the student loses the privilege of using the laptop in class the rest of the semester.  Students who use laptops in class should agree to take their hands off the keyboard when requested so I can see what is on the screen. I often work on the laptop while you write in class.  I do not use it for recreational purposes during that time.
  2. Students who sit in the back row (particularly the corners) should expect to be called on first.  So if you are in the back row I assume you really want to answer questions posed to the class or volunteer for activities in class that day.  You will be my best friend that day.

What do I need to know about classroom policies and procedures?

1.    All writing assignments must be formatted according to standard MLA requirements and posted to the course website. See the MLA Formatting and Style Guide at the Purdue OWL for assistance. The URL is http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/.

2.    Students can also review the MLA Style guide at the Valencia College library. The URL is http://valenciacollege.edu/library/documentation.cfm.

3.    Any student needing assistance with reading or writing assignments is encouraged to use Valencia College resources for which he or she has already paid with tuition and should use. The URL is

http://valenciacollege.edu/communications/

4.    Students are expected to meet deadlines on the course class schedule. Students who miss the due date for any combination of three discussions, peer review of rough draft, or final paper posts will be dropped from the course for non-attendance. The last date of attendance entered for the grade will be the date of the last post the student made. Students can miss two such posts without an attendance penalty.

5.    Students are expected to have Internet access throughout the course and are required to establish a Plan B computer and Plan B Internet access should their primary computer or access be unavailable.

6.    Travelling and vacations do not preclude students from meeting course requirements or extend due dates. Go to a hotel business center, a local library, or a local Internet café. The Internet is also available on cruise ships, trains, and airplanes but it is not cheap.

7.    Academic honesty requires that all work submitted by the student be totally original or properly credited. Students guilty of plagiarism will not receive credit for the assignment in question and may be failed for the course. Review the following material at the Purdue OWL to learn about plagiarism in general. The URL is http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/.

Review the material in the Valencia College Student Handbook to find materials related to Valencia College and plagiarism. They are found in the section beginning on page 55. The URL is http://valenciacollege.edu/pdf/studenthandbook.pdf

8.    Students must use Valencia College library resources for papers.  Internet sources such as Spark Notes or wikipedia will result in an F grade for a paper. Students will be instructed to complete library tutorials that explain how to use online library resources.

9.     Online communication should be civil and respectful meeting Valencia’s Code of Student Conduct found in the Valencia Student Handbook. Review the material at the Valencia College Student Handbook beginning on page 55. The URL is http://valenciacollege.edu/pdf/studenthandbook.pdf.

10. Students must post work in the appropriate discussion for each week in order to earn points and attendance. Not doing so is akin to going to the wrong classroom for which one would also not receive attendance credit. It is not acceptable to be somewhere in the building/somewhere on the course website.

11. Valencia Community College is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for all persons with disabilities. This syllabus is available in alternate formats upon request. Students who need accommodations must be registered with Student Disability Services before requesting accommodations from the professor. The URL is http://valenciacollege.edu/osd/

Students with disabilities, who need accommodations in this course, must contact the professor at the beginning of the semester to discuss needed accommodations. No accommodations will be provided until the student has met with the professor to request accommodations
