Course Description

Welcome to Physics with Medical Applications. In this course, you will learn the basic concepts of physics associated with the health field. Physics is a heavily interdisciplinary subject matter. And the goal of this course is to instill some understanding of physics as it may apply to health/medicine. Topics will include principles of mechanics, heat, electricity and magnetism, optics, and atomic physics applied to the health field, and real-life situations.  But at its core this is a physics course, and we will need to learn quite a bit of physics before we are able to understand some of its applications.

Prerequisites

MAC 1102 or MAC 1105 or two years of high school algebra.

This course will enable a student to understand the fundamental laws of physics to develop appropriate analytical thinking, problem-solving, and physics laboratory skills.

Expectations and Recommendations

Math and Physics are both very cumulative in nature, it is important to not fall behind in the modules as catching up can be very difficult. I recommend spending at least half an hour every day actively writing/solving problems (doing the homeworks and labs counts toward this time)

I hope this will be a positive learning experience, and that maybe I can instill some interests in Physics for you.

Course Materials

Textbook- Open Access (Free) College physics textbook available

Textbook available on Openstax https://openstax.org/details/books/college-physics

But, everything you will NEED you can find on CANVAS. The textbook mainly serves as an additional reference for study and additional practice problems. Please regularly check CANVAS for instructions and guidance, as well as reach out to me with questions. It will often be more important to follow the material within the modules on CANVAS then reference this textbook.

Grading Policy

1)         Homework - 25% of your class grade

3)         Labs – 25% of your class grade.

4)         Tests – *25% of your class grade

5)         Final Exam – *25% of your class grade. (See below for final exemption policy)

*NOTE – Read below about how your test grade or final grade is replaced by the higher of the two.

Functionally your test average OR final exam is worth 60% but it is only the highest between the two that counts

Curves on tests and the final exam are possible, depending on average performance.

Grading Scale

Letter Grade

Total Percentages

A

90 – 100%

B

80 – 89%

C

70 – 79%

D

60 – 69%

F

Below 60% = F

Test average and Final exam “replacement” policy

*At the end of the semester the test grade (average of the three tests) or the final exam grade, whichever is higher will replace the other and be counted as both your test average and final exam score (50% total)

Here are some examples of this policy

Sally has a 72% as their test average, and then scores a 50% on the final. For their final grade calculation, I would treat Sally as having a 72% test average and a 72% on the final.

Joshua has a 68% test average, but then scores an 83% on the final exam. For their final grade calculation, I would treat Joshua as having an 83% test average and an 83% on the final exam.

*This means some of you may be eligible to skip the final exam entirely if your test average grade is high enough. I’ll explain this more specifically towards the end of the semester

For both labs and homework, the grade average will exclude the lowest assignment grade.

Students will have the opportunity to obtain extra credit points by completing an extra credit paper.

Course Design and Organization:

This is a hybrid module-based course. Therefore, all the information and course activities, such as lecture notes/videos, assignments, homework, projects, tests, etc., will be available in the corresponding module.  The lab portion of the course will be IN-PERSON on West Campus

Online courses and everyone’s busy schedules can make it tough to organize your time I encourage you to teach out to me if you need any help in this matter

Each Module will include:

-          A lecture powerpoint, which will cover the main module concepts, it will include illustrations, graphs, and in some cases, some problem with solutions. In the lecture notes, you will be able to find the solution for the conceptual homework. Keep in mind that some questions will not be verbatim definitions and may require some analysis of the figures/concepts.

-          A lecture video, once the live lecture is concluded and the video is uploaded

-          “Two” homeworks but really just a part 1 and 2, one of which, the conceptual homework, will be 15 or fewer multiple choice and true and false questions, you will have two attempts and your highest grade will be kept. The other one will be problems which you need to answer and upload a file in the assignment that shows your work/math. You can do this by typing out the work/math or by doing it by hand and scanning it/photographing it. Please make sure it is clearly visible. Exceptable file formats to upload are docx, pdf, JPEG and PNG . Apple users be careful CANVAS can not read some common apple specific files types such as pages, or heic.

Lab Portion of the Course is On CAMPUS

-          You need to attend one of the lab orientation meetings during the first week of class. This will help explain a lot of what is expected of you

-          Lab instructions, lab videos, lab pictures, lab instructions and a prelab will be provided either in modules within this course or on the separate lab CANVAS courses.

-          You need to make a reservation to go to the Lab On Campus. The reservation can be from Monday to Thursday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The lab instructor will help you with the lab there.  I will not accept the lab report if the lab instructors do not confirm that you check the calculation with them.

-          These reservations are made on a per lab basis. There are nine labs in total. Typically, the lab staff will have you schedule them a week or two ahead of time.

-          You will ideally complete these labs in groups of three. But since this course has no specific time requirements you may find you schedule does not align with anyone else and may schedule a lab session as an individual. But it is recommended that you find lab partners if possible.

Tests

We will have three tests and a final exam (same format as the tests) that will be available on CANVAS (online).

The tests will be available for two days (Wednesday and Thursday) and due at 11:59pm Thursday. Additionally, they will be time-limited to two hours. This means do not open and start the test until you know you have time to do it.

The Final Exam may be time-limited to two and a half hours
