Course Structure: Your lessons are categorized by week and are divided into modules which range from Monday through Sunday. Follow the specific instructions for each item found within the modules.
Announcements and E-mails will be posted to keep you informed of new information that has been posted.
Online courses require a great deal of self-study and discipline. Keep yourself informed of all the due dates and get yourself on a weekly schedule to complete all of the readings and assignments. Do not procrastinate.
Attendance: Attendance is noted by weekly discussion boards and quizzes. If a student does not take quizzes or post to the discussion board within the first week of class, they will be withdrawn without reinstatement.
COVID GUIDELINES: Throughout the COVID pandemic, Valencia College has been primarily focused on the health and well-being of its students and faculty and staff. This continues to be our priority as we return to more face-to-face classes, and college policy continues to be guided by science and the guidelines issued by the CDC and our partners at Orlando Health.
Should you become ill with COVID, please inform me and your other professors for your safety and for the safety of our Valencia community. Please inform our COVID liaison Tanya Mahan (COVIDillness@valenciacollege.edu) as well, so she can support you in this process. For more information, please consult: https://valenciacollege.edu/about/coronavirus/ (Links to an external site.).
I will do what I can to assist you in successfully completing our coursework. We will have a conversation to evaluate your needs and we will design a reasonable timeline for you to complete work. An incomplete (I) will only be given if one partial assessment is missing and/or the final exam. Please do not wait to contact me.
Philosophy of the Classroom: I accept no late work. You have made a commitment to bettering yourself by coming to college. Take responsibility for yourself and your work. Work is due when assigned. If you know that you will have a conflict, it is your responsibility to make alternative plans with me. Do not wait until the day the work is due to make arrangements; you will be too late. Equally, the tests, exams, in-class debates, etc. will not be rescheduled.
Course Evaluation: At the end of the semester a student’s grade will be comprised of the following:
IN ORDER TO PASS THE COURSE, ALL REQUIREMENTS MUST BE FULFILLED.
GRADE BREAKDOWN
Two Tests 30% (15% each)
Final Exam 20%
Paper 20%
Quizzes 20%
Discussion/Debates 10%
GRADING SCALE: The grading scale will be: A - 100-90, B - 89-80, C - 79-70, D - 69-60, F - 59 and below.
Note: I do not round final grades. For example, a final grade of 88% or 89.4% is a “B.”
Grades are updated on Canvas throughout the semester. Be involved and continually evaluate your grade in class. I do not negotiate grades and do not offer extra credit. Assignment guidelines are provided to guide your success on assessments. I am also available to help and answer questions. You, the student, are responsible for the quality of submitted work and by the posted deadline.
Exams: Exams will include any combination of image identification, multiple choice, fill in the blank, true/false, short answer, or essay.
Your tests are available online for at least 1 week. If you do not take it in the time allotted, I will not reset the test except in extreme emergencies. Please review the late work policy.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be weekly and based upon the reading, videos, lectures, and activities for each weekly section. The format will often be any combination of multiple choice, true/false, image identification, chronological orders, or essay.
Exams and Quizzes are timed. When your time expires the exam or quiz will be automatically submitted. The Quiz for each week MUST be submitted BY 11:59pm EACH SUNDAY. If it is late, it will not be counted.
Discussions: These are critical thinking questions and generally do not have a right or wrong answer. The prompts provide an opportunity for you to analyze works of art and concepts by applying what you learned from each module. Studying art is sometimes subjective and lends itself to the viewer’s interpretation.
To receive full credit you must submit 1 post responding to the discussion prompt (At Least 250-300 Words) and 2 posts responding to other students (At least 100 Words Each). This is a total of 3 posts. When replying to other students you cannot simply say that you agree with another student’s statement and expect full credit. These postings need to be intelligently constructed and thoughtful. Remember this is a college course and all college guidelines must be followed when writing (i.e. correct sentence grammar and punctuation, spelling, complete sentences). Points will be deducted if your sentences are not college level writing.
Postings for that week MUST be submitted BY 11:59 pm every Sunday. Discussion posts will not be accepted after the due date.
Papers & Assignments: Please do not email assignments to me, as they will not be accepted. Submit each assignment according to the provided directions. If you are experiencing technological problems submitting the assignment, please first contact OIT. If you continue to experience technological problems, contact me for further instruction.
Be mindful of what you are doing and check your work after submission. I will not accept any work that was uploaded incorrectly.
All writing for this class, exams, discussions, quizzes, papers, e-mails, etc. is to be of college quality. Please use MLA format and all work must be cited if you use any sources; YOU MUST PROVIDE IN TEXT CITATIONS AND A WORKS CITED PAGE if you use a source, including the textbook. Failure to do this will reduce your grade 3 LETTER GRADES (1 ½ for lack of in text citations and 1 ½ for lack of Works Cited page. For example, if you fail to provide both of these, I begin grading your paper at a 69% If you do not provide one of these, grading will begin at 84% however, if plagiarism is evident your grade will result in a “0” without chance of rewrite (more on plagiarism below).
Late Work: I do not accept late work. If you are unable to participate in the course due to illness, family emergency, etc., please communicate with me as soon as possible in order to create a plan to deal with the situation as it affects your class work. If more than a week has passed, and you have not communicated with me, I will not accept late work. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns
Note About Computers: Even though computers and word-processing software are time and energy-saving devices, they can and do cause problems with the production of your documents. Please be aware that a broken or ill-functioning computer, or the inability to retrieve, produce or submit your assignments from a computer will not be accepted as a valid excuse for a document that is submitted late. I highly recommend that you submit items earlier than the deadline, waiting until the last minute and having a technical problem will not excuse you from a test, quiz, project, or paper.
If you are experiencing technical difficulties (anything from a document not loading properly to issues logging in) with Canvas please contact the help desk by calling (407) 582-5600(available 24/7) or visiting this link

Course Structure: We are in a hybrid course structure. We will meet Tuesdays from 8:30 to 9:45am. Our classroom is West Campus, Building 3, Room 212. On Tuesdays we will go over the subject matter for the week (these lectures are on Canvas as well if you have to miss a class). The rest of the work, papers, quizzes, tests, discussion boards, etc., will be done on your own on Canvas. Your lessons are all on Canvas, categorized by week and are divided into modules which range from Monday through Sunday. Follow the specific instructions for each item found within the modules.

Online courses require a great deal of self-study and discipline. Keep yourself informed of all the due dates and get yourself on a weekly schedule to complete all of the readings and assignments. Do not procrastinate.
Attendance: Attendance will be taken on Tuesdays. You will have a class participation grade that is based on your participation in the classroom.
Attendance is also noted by weekly discussion boards and quizzes. If a student does not take quizzes or post to the discussion board within the first week of class, they will be withdrawn without reinstatement.
CLASS PARTICIPATION will be 20% of your final grade. Class participation will take many guises: class discussions, presentations, and pop quizzes among other items. Class Participation is an essential and required component of this professor's classroom dynamic. This requirement does not just entail the ability of the student to open his/her mouth and let any random musing clatter onto the tabletop. Students will be evaluated based on the quality, insightfulness and perceptiveness of their comments.
Exemplary attendance and no participation will equal a C.
Exemplary attendance and occasional thought provoking remarks or well-framed questions will constitute a B.
Exemplary attendance and excellent observations, analysis and comments will receive an A.
The teacher reserves the right to also bestow variations upon a grade, for instance A-, C+, etc.
CELL PHONES & LAPTOPS: Please turn off all cell phones during class. If your phone rings during class, you will lose half a letter grade off your final grade. If the phone rings during an exam, you will fail the exam and lose a half a letter grade off your final grade. No texting in class. If you choose to use a laptop to take notes, please stick to taking notes. If I find that you are doing work for another class or “playing” on the computer (email, internet, games, etc), you will lose a letter grade off of your final grade for each infraction. It is distracting, rude and annoying to your fellow students and to the professor.
COVID GUIDELINES: Throughout the COVID pandemic, Valencia College has been primarily focused on the health and well-being of its students and faculty and staff. Course Description: Introductory art appreciation course designed to provide student with foundation for understanding contemporary visual arts.
Prerequisite: None
Required Textbook: You are not required to purchase a textbook. Most reading assignments are from Introduction to Art: Design, Context, and Meaning, by Sachant. This textbook is an Open Educational Resource (OER), so it is free and provided in the Canvas course. Additional reading assignments will be posted in Canvas modules.
Course Outcomes: Upon completion of ARH 1000, students should be able to:
· Each student should be able to distinguish the major media in art including: painting, architecture, sculpture, printmaking, photography, film, and have a working familiarity with the terms specific to these media.
· Have an understanding of why artists create and what motivates them to create a particular type of work.
· Be able to recognize the elements used by artists in making a work of art and the principles of design used in composing a work of art
· Apply art historical concepts and terms to an appreciation of the arts
This course reinforces the following Valencia Student Core Competencies
· Think clearly, critically and creatively by analyzing, synthesizing, integrating and evaluating symbolic works and truth claim
· Value by understanding your own and others’ values from individual, cultural, and global, perspectives.
· Communicate by reading, writing, and speaking, effectively.
· Act purposefully, reflectively, and responsibly by implementing effective problem solving and decision-making strategies.
Course Structure: We are in a hybrid course structure. We will meet Tuesdays from 10 to 11:15am. Our classroom is West Campus, (to be announced).
Announcements and E-mails will be posted to keep you informed of new information that has been posted.
Online courses require a great deal of self-study and discipline. Keep yourself informed of all the due dates and get yourself on a weekly schedule to complete all of the readings and assignments. Do not procrastinate.
Two Tests 25% (12.5% each)
Final Exam 18%
Paper 18%
Quizzes 19%
Discussion/Debates 10%
Class Participation 10%

These penalties may include, but not be limited to, one or more of the following: loss of credit for an assignment, examination, or project; reduction in the course grade; or a grade of "F" in the course.
