COURSE DESCRIPTION

HUMAN RESOURCES RECRUITMENT, SELECTION AND STAFFING

Prerequisite: MAN 2300 

This course examines how the functions of recruitment, selection and staffing/training fit into a Human Resources Department. Students will practice analyzing positions, recruiting qualified applicants, interviewing candidates for employment and, once hired, orient and train them.

 COURSE OUTCOMES:

. The student will be able to learn different recruitment resources when advertising.
· The student will be able to learn the cost of turnover, and how poor quality, and low productivity can increase the costs of the hiring process.
· The student will be able to learn how to market a hiring company in a way that will attract the type of applicants the firm is seeking.
· The student will be able to learn how to use an employment application as a screening tool and assess a candidate’s motivation to do the job.

You are required to purchase the following book for this course:

Strategic Staffing. Author: Jean M. Phillips, Chicago Business Press. 5th Edition

In addition, we will be provided with handouts or shown videos, as additional learning resources. You may need to visit the library to conduct short research projects.

 

COMPUTER/EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

You will need a computer or access to a computer to complete all of the assessments for this course. 

As a Valencia student, you have access to Microsoft Word (as well as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) free for personal use.  You can learn more about accessing these applications in Atlas, on the "My Atlas" tab, right hand column, under "Microsoft Office for Personal Use."

ASSESSMENT METHODS AND EVALUATION:
Weekly homework assignments will be posted through Canvas. It is your responsibility, as a student, to read and submit complete assignments before or on the due date.

You must complete all coursework.  Any assignment that is not submitted will receive a grade of 0 and will impact your overall course grade.

NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. **only accepted as mandated by
College Policy with appropriate documentation. Grading is based on demonstrated understanding and application of the concepts and processes studied in the course.

The final exam is required, and the final exam grade enters the average for the overall course performance reflected in the posted final grade.

No Show Policy

Class attendance is required for online classes; students who are not actively participating in an online class and/or do not submit the required attendance activity or assignment by the scheduled due date must be withdrawn by the instructor at the end of the first week as a "no show". Withdrawal Policy

Per Valencia policyLinks to an external site. a student who withdraws from class before the established deadline for a particular term will receive a grade of “W. The withdrawal deadline for this class is February 9th, 2024. A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline.

A faculty member will withdraw a student up to the withdrawal deadline for violation of the class attendance policy. A student who is withdrawn by faculty for violation of the class attendance policy will receive a grade of “W”. After the withdrawal deadline, faculty will not withdraw a student and the student will receive the grade earned at the end of the course. Any student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a class during a third or subsequent attempt in the same course will be assigned a grade of “F.” If you do not intend to complete the course, you must withdraw yourself prior to the withdrawal date.

CLASSROOM POLICY ATTENDANCE: Regularity in participation and punctuality is vital to academic success. Students are expected to participate regularly and punctually. Students who miss information must contact a classmate to acquire any notes or information missed. Students who do not maintain regular attendance may be withdrawn by the professor.

IMPORTANT: Weekly online attendance will be documented via students’ participation in the weekly assignments. You must complete each assignment on time. If the assignment is received late, you will receive partial credit. **only accepted as mandated by College Policy with appropriate documentation.

CLASSROOM POLICY ON RECORDING LECTURES: As your professor, I’m committed to giving you as many opportunities and resources to support your learning as possible. Therefore, you may find it beneficial to record class lectures to review later. Please keep in mind that you do not have your peers’ permission to record them, and they have a right to privacy; your peers should not be in your recordings. There please stop any recording when a classmate is speaking. You may not record class discussions, student presentations, labs, group work, and private conversations.  Further, these recordings are permitted for your own personal use only. Note that while these recordings are useful for review, class attendance and participation remain requirements. Should you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact me in person, through Atlas email or Canvas message.

 COURSE POLICIES

Attendance Policy

If you do not attend, as described below, for two weeks in the semester, you are subject to withdrawal. Attendance is recorded when you must submit at least one of the following items each week:

  1. Submit an academic assignment.
  2. Submit a quiz or exam.
  3. Participate in a posted online academic discussion.
  4. Participate in the classroom in a discussion or presentation.

Logging into Canvas without submitting one of the above items does not count for attendance.  If the syllabus notes additional activities that must be completed during a given week or time period for the student to be viewed as having “attended” the course, those instructions apply in addition to the minimal requirements listed above. The dual in-class and online course environment weeks run from Monday at 12:00 am EST to Sunday at 11:59 pm EST.

Late Work/Makeup Policy

The student is responsible for submitting all assessments before their respective due dates. Late submissions will not be accepted unless a documented extenuating circumstance such as hospitalization, death of an immediate family member, etc. is provided to the professor, or other prior arrangements were made. Whenever there is a difference between the course summary due date in the syllabus and the date indicated in the learning module, the date shown in the actual learning module prevails.

Students must do their own work; there are no exceptions.  All written assignments are submitted to an online plagiarism checker. Students who plagiarize or cheat, in any way, risk dismissal from the class and expulsion from the college.
