Dr. Veronica Yates-Riley
Dr. Veronica Yates-Riley is an Associate Faculty Member at Valencia College and a former Mathematics Specialist for Orange County Public Schools. She began her teaching career in 1989. She has served as the Mathematics Department Chair at Jones High School, Mathematics Teacher, and Varsity Tennis Coach at West Orange High School from 1989-2004. She also serves as a Steward Board member and Church School Superintendent for her church.
A native of Orlando, Florida, Yates-Riley received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) from the University of Florida and Master of Science (M.S.) and Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) from Nova Southeastern University. She earned a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in education (specialization in Community College Leadership) from Walden University. She has completed her dissertation entitled: Exploring Different Perspectives of the Implementation of a College’s Diversity Plan. Moreover, in 2001, she achieved her National Board Certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and she joined the faculty of Valencia Community College as an adjunct professor. In 2006, she achieved the rank Associate Faculty Member of Valencia Community College. Her professional career has been dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of mathematics as well as increasing the presence of African Americans in higher education. Yates-Riley was born, reared, and currently resides in Orlando, Florida.
Yates-Riley serves her community in many capacities from reading to children at the local shelter to walking for cancer awareness and research. She mentors teachers and have presented at the District-wide Professional Development for mathematics teachers. For her service, she has been awarded several certificates, plaques, trophies, and honors. Although she is grateful for the recognition, she is most proud of her honor as Who’s Who Among America’s Teacher (multi-year honoree) because students are the nominators. Moreover, she is an active member of Phi Delta Kappa International (Life Member), Pi Mu Epsilon Honorary Mathematics Fraternity, Association of Florida Colleges (AFC), Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. (Life Member), Gamma Sigma Sigma National Service Sorority, The Links, Incorporated, and the University of Florida Alumni Association (Life Member).
Yates-Riley is a mother of three children: Koltan, II, Kertesha, and Krystal. The twins, Koltan, II, Kertesha, and Krystal are alumnus of the University of Central Florida (UCF), University of Florida (UF), and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), respectively. In addition, Kertesha is a career counselor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Koltan is an electrical engineer with a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). Krystal is an administrative assistant in the Duval Public School System.
