IV. TEACHING STYLES/INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
This lab uses hands on activities to facilitate learning. Blackboard is used as a resource only for announcements/emails and various assignments.
V. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Corequisite: DES 1200. Develops student proficiency in exposing and scanning diagnostically acceptable radiographs. Lab sessions provide experience in x-ray safety procedures, exposure, handling, mounting and interpreting radiographs.
VI. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

· Expose and handle digital phosphor plates and sensors.
· Demonstrate patient positioning for extraoral film exposure.
· Evaluate film placement techniques on sample intraoral radiographs and patient positioning errors on extraoral films.
· Identify anatomical landmarks and dental diseases on sample radiographic series.

VIII. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
The student will be expected to:
A. Attend all laboratory sessions.
B. Participate in Blackboard as assigned.
C. Complete all assignments.
D. Complete all assigned readings prior to laboratory sessions.
E. Satisfactorily complete skill evaluations.
F. Satisfactorily complete radiographic technique proficiencies.
G. Expose, process, mount and evaluate one full mouth series using the scan-x/film sensors utilizing the paralleling technique and dexter.
H. Expose, process, mount and evaluate one full mouth series of radiographs with digital sensors, utilizing the paralleling technique and dexter.
I. Expose, process and mount one full mouth series of radiographs on a clinical patient, that are diagnostically acceptable, utilizing criteria to be outlined in the clinic manual.
J. Expose, process, and mount three sets of bitewing series of radiographs (adult dexter) and 1 set of Bitewing series on a pedodontic dexter.
K. Demonstrate use of the digital panoramic equipment, evaluate sample patient- panoramic film.

Each student is expected to be in lab 15 minutes prior to class time to prepare radiography operatories for the day’s activities. These activities will be posted in the clinic with appropriate student/partner and operatory assignments.
X. EVALUATION:

Skill Evaluations/Lab Exercises = 100
Manikin FMS (2) 100 pts each = 200
Manikin BWX (3), Pedo dexter (1) (25 pts each) = 100
Clinical Patient = 100
Occlusal Film (2) 15 pts each = 30
Panoramic Evaluation = 100
Professionalism Grade (15 labs) 5 pts each = 15
Anatomical Landmark Exam (Final) = 100
Approx.Total = 745
Grading Scale:
A = 93 - 100%
B = 85 - 92%
C = 75 - 84%
F = Below 75%
A minimum passing grade of (C) 75% must be achieved to pass the course.
XI. CLASSROOM POLICIES:
A. Absences and Make-up Work
1. The student is expected to attend each class meeting.
2. The student is responsible for all material covered or assigned during classes or labs.
3. Due to the nature of the course, attendance is required. If you are unable to attend a lecture or lab session of the course, you must notify the Dental Hygiene staff assistant by 8:00 AM the day of the absence or you must inform the instructor prior to the absence. Be prepared to present a physician’s excuse if requested.
Three tardies will be equivalent to one unexcused absence. With three unexcused absences, the student will be dropped from the course. The absence will be determined as excused or unexcused according to the attendance policy in the clinic manual. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor for assignments, handouts and make-up work missed during an absence.
4. Late lab assignments and film evaluations will have 2 points deducted from the assignment grade for each day the assignment is late.
5. Discussion posts and online assignments are not graded if submitted after the due date.
B. Academic Honesty
Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the college catalog and the student handbook. Any student cheating on an exam will receive a zero on the exam which cannot be replaced by the final exam score and the professor at his discretion can withdraw the student from the class.

C. Drop/Add
September 5, 2017 Add/Refund Deadline (Drop classes with 100% refund)
To receive a 100% refund of the refundable fees, students must drop from a
course or all courses before the last day of the Drop/Add period as listed in the
credit class schedule.
If you withdraw from a class after the Add/Drop period but before the
Withdrawal deadline, you will receive a grade of "W" and will not be entitled to a
refund of fees.
C. Withdrawal
Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and Withdrawals), a student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of November 10, 2017 will receive a grade of “W.” A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty member MAY withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the class attendance policy. D. Electronic Devices
We ask that there be no cell phones or audible beepers in class. These are very disruptive. The exception would be for an emergency situation that was explained to the professor before class.
