 IV.      COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

Corequisite:  DES 1100.  Includes properties, manipulation and application of dental materials.  Students practice manipulating and using materials commonly used in dental and dental hygiene practice.  (Special Fee:  $50.00)

 

 

 

 

 

 V.       COURSE OBJECTIVE:

 

The student will be able to demonstrate proper manipulation techniques for a variety of dental materials used in dental hygiene and clinical dentistry.

 

The student will demonstrate competency in the following expanded duties: sealants, alginate impressions, study models, elastomeric impressions, rubber dam, matrix bands, temporary crowns, cements, bleaching trays, periodontal dressings, suture removal, amalgam polishing and temporary restorations.

 

 

VI.       MAJOR LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The student will demonstrate manipulation and application for a variety of dental

materials used in dental hygiene and clinical dentistry.

 IX.      CLASSROOM POLICIES:

 

            A.        Absences and Make-up Work

 

                        1.         The student is expected to attend the entire class at each class meeting.

                        2.         The student is responsible for all material covered or assigned during classes or labs.

                        3.         In case of absences the instructor must be notified (in advance, if possible, or at the beginning of the class meeting).

                        4.         No make-up labs will be conducted.

 

            B.        Electronic Devices

 

We ask that there be no cell phones or audible beepers in class.  These are very disruptive.  The exception would be for an emergency that is explained to the instructor prior to class.  Points may be deducted at the discretion of the instructor.

 

            C.        Academic Honesty

 

Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on academic honesty as set forth in the college catalog and the student handbook.  Any student cheating on an exam will receive a zero on the exam which cannot be replaced by the final exam score and the professor at his discretion can withdraw the student from the class.

            D.        Withdrawal Policy

 

Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and Withdrawals), a student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of November 10, 2017 will receive a grade of “W.”  A student is not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline.  A faculty member MAY withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the class attendance policy.                         September 5, 2017 Add/Refund Deadline (Drop classes with 100% refund)

To receive a 100% refund of the refundable fees, students must drop from a course or all courses before the last day of the Drop/Add period as listed in the credit class schedule.

 

If you withdraw from a class after the Add/Drop period but before the withdrawal deadline, you will receive a grade of "W" and will not be entitled to a refund of fees.

LAB OBJECTIVES

 

 

INTRODUCTION TO DENTAL MATERIALS

 

The student will be able to:

 

            1.         Define terminology.

 

            2.         Identify armamentarium commonly used to manipulate dental materials.

           

GYPSUM

 

The student will be able to:

 

            1.         Demonstrate correct sequence for mixing gypsum products and identify conditions that affect setting time and mix consistency.

 

            2.         Identify armamentarium necessary for mixing gypsum.

 

            3.         Form the anatomical portion of a model by pouring stone into a rubber mold.

 

            4.         Demonstrate proper use of a model trimmer.

 

            5.         Trim a set of study models according to stated criteria; identify mixing and setting times of gypsum products.

 

            6.         State conditions which affect setting time and mix consistency.

 

IMPRESSION MATERIALS

 

The student will be able to:

 

A.        Hydrocolloids

 

            1.         Collect appropriate armamentarium, mix alginate impression material in correct sequence and load the tray for an impression.

 

            2.         Obtain an acceptable alginate impression on a student partner.

 

            3.         State conditions, which affect setting time and mix consistency.


 

 

 

B.        Elastomerics

 

1.         Collect and assemble appropriate armamentarium

 

            2.         Dispense material using proper proportions and technique to obtain a bite registration on a student partner.

 

DIRECT ESTHETIC RESTORATIVE MATERIALS AND SEALANTS

 

The student will be able to:

 

            1.         Discuss the rationale and objectives for sealant placement.

 

            2.         Describe and demonstrate (on extracted tooth) the steps in sealant application for both chemical and light activated sealant.

 

            3.         Identify and assemble armamentarium required for a sealant tray set-up.

 

            4.         Place two sealants on a student partner.

 

5.         Assemble armamentarium for composite restoration.

 

6.         Place composite restoration on typodont.

 

 CEMENTS, BASES AND LINERS

 

The student will be able to:

 

            1.         Assemble appropriate armamentaria and demonstrate proper preparation and mixing techniques for:

                        a.         IRM

                        b.         calcium hydroxide

                        c.         polycarboxylate

                        d.         glass ionomer

 

            2.         Cement a stock temporary crown on a typodont.

 

            3.         Remove excess cement from margins of the stock crown.

 

            4.         Place a temporary restoration (ZOE), with a cavity liner, in a typodont.

 


 

 

RUBBER DAM/MATRIX BAND

 

The student will be able to:

 

1.         Collect armamentarium for placement of rubber dam.

 

            2.         Place a rubber dam for a Class II temporary restoration on a typodont.

 

            3.         Place a rubber dam and matrix band and wedge on a typodont for a Class II restoration.

 

            4.         Collect and identify armamentaria for placement and carving of a temporary restoration and cavity liner on a typodont.

 

INDIRECT RESTORATIVE MATERIALS

 

The student will be able to:

 

1.         Participate in tour of dental laboratory.

 

            2.         Complete one page summary of the dental lab tour experience.

 

ACRYLICS, PLASTICS, AND WAXES

 

The student will be able to:

 

1.         List indications for tooth bleaching.

 

2.         List contraindications for tooth bleaching.

 

3.         Fabricate bleaching tray.

 

FABRICATION AND CEMENTATION OF A TEMPORARY CROWN

 

The student will be able to:

 

1.         Fabricate a temporary crown.

 

2.         Mix and place appropriate cement in preformed crowns.
